A Better Way to Support Independent Music

inal bilsel, nostalgia for the future, performance

The music industry is changing—but not necessarily for the better. There’s something about the way music is valued today that doesn’t sit right with me. I want to share my thoughts on this and how you can make a real difference.

In the vast landscape of music streaming, platforms like Spotify have become household names. While they offer convenience, they often fall short in fairly compensating artists. Spotify's royalty system pays artists between $0.003 and $0.005 per stream, making it challenging for many to sustain their craft.

Moreover, recent reports have highlighted practices where Spotify populates playlists with "ghost artists" to minimize royalty payouts to genuine musicians.

Recently, Spotify's CEO, Daniel Ek, claimed that the cost of creating content is "close to zero" in today's world. This statement sparked significant backlash from the music community, as it overlooks the substantial time, effort, and financial resources that artists invest in their work. Such remarks from industry leaders reflect a disconnect from the realities faced by independent musicians, highlighting the need for platforms that genuinely value and support artists.

In contrast, Bandcamp stands as a beacon for artists like me. This platform allows musicians to sell their work directly to fans, retaining an average of 82% of the revenue. Since its inception, fans have paid artists and their labels over $1.46 billion through Bandcamp. Additionally, Bandcamp offers music in lossless formats, ensuring you receive the highest audio quality while directly supporting the creators you love.

The current trajectory of the music industry often prioritizes profit over artistry, with streaming giants focusing on passive consumption and background listening. This shift not only undervalues the artist's work but also transforms music into a mere commodity.

By following me on Bandcamp, you're not just accessing my music; you're becoming an integral part of a community that values and uplifts independent artistry. Your support enables me to continue creating, sharing, and connecting through the universal language of music.

Thank you for being an essential part of this journey. Together, we can redefine the music landscape to honor and cherish the art and its creators.
